Digicel upgrades its EDGE network to keep up with mobile internet demand

Digicel, St. Vincent’s ‘Bigger Better Network’, announced last week that the number of customers on its mobile internet service has increased by over 300 per cent in the past twelve (12) months.{{more}}

This has in turn resulted in Digicel making added investment in its EDGE network to sustain the continued growth and ensure that customers benefit from the best experience, underpinned by the best value, a press release from the company said.

“The worldwide increase in the popularity of mobile internet services is mostly due to the ‘social media’ subculture that is driven by applications such as Facebook and Twitter. As a result, the power of being able to connect to the internet from a mobile phone has now become a necessity for most users,” the release said.

“The growth Digicel St. Vincent has experienced can be attributed to its affordable mobile internet packages available for Blackberry smartphones and other internet ready devices. With daily packages as low $2.88, being connected to the worldwide web has never been more affordable and as a growing number of Vincentians are able to subscribe to these services, helping to make Digicel the leading provider of mobile internet services across the island.

“With such a tremendous increase in the number of smartphones users on the Digicel EDGE network, it has become necessary to increase the data capacity on the network. ‘We’ve increased our capacity to sustain all of our mobile internet customers, guaranteeing the best customer experience possible while using our services,’ said Sonia Polius, Country Manager.”

As a result of the upgrade work being done, Digicel customers may experience some intermittent interruptions in service and the company apologizes for this, but this will be resolved as soon as the works are completed. “We’re committed to getting more and more Vincentians on to our mobile internet services” said Polius, “Whether you purchased one of the internet ready devices we presently have on special in our stores, or received one as a gift from a friend or relative aboard, we’ve got the right plan for you and your pocket to join the mobile internet movement!” she concluded.
