13 to vie today for Courts/OECS reading competition national finals

Zonal action in the Courts/OECS Reading competition is expected to continue today, with 13 schools vying in national finals.{{more}}

This morning in the Union Zone, the South Rivers Methodist, Park Hill Government, Byrea Anglican, Diamond Government, Union Methodist and Greiggs Government Schools are scheduled to face off in the reading competition, which will see the students reading two impromptu passages and answering comprehension questions.

The competition takes place at the San Souci Learning Resource Centre and begins at 9:00 am.

The San Souci Learning Resource Centre will also be the venue for the Georgetown Zone, which will see students from the Fancy Government, Sandy Bay Anglican, Owia Government, Tourama Government, Langley Park Government, Dickson Methodist and Georgetown Government competing.

Yesterday, Monday, September 26, the North Leeward and South Leeward Zones were in action, and tomorrow Wednesday, September 28, schools in the Marriaqua zone will be in action. On Thursday, the Calliaqua Zone and the Kingstown Zone will be showing off their reading skills.

The Grenadines schools will have their turn on Friday, September 30.

The local finals is scheduled to take place on October 16th, with the region finals in November.

The winning reader will receive a prize of $2,000; the winning school will get $2,000. The winner will also be given the opportunity to read a segment of news on SVG TV and represent St. Vincent and the Grenadines at the regional finals in St. Kitts.

The second placed student and school will win $1000 each, with third place receiving $750. Fourth and fifth places will receive $500.

Each participant in the competition will receive books, compliments Jujube book store and Acute Cosmetics.

All nine finalists will be given savings accounts, compliments CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank.

The top three students will receive a dental care package, compliments Dental Care dental clinic.
