CAPE students equal last year’s overall performance

Students who sat this year’s Caribbean Advanced proficiency Examinations (CAPE) have maintained overall performance – equalling that of last year’s students.{{more}}

A press release from the Ministry of Education stated that the preliminary results of the May/June 2011 examinations showed an overall pass rate of 84 per cent, which was also achieved by students in 2010.

This year, there were 906 candidate entries – 876 from the SVG Community College, and 30 private candidates. This was a marked increase from last year when there were 722 candidates.

Students sat 2,090 examinations in 16 subjects, compared with 1,556 examinations in 24 subjects in 2010.

One hundred per cent passes were recorded in French Unit 2, Management of Business Unit 2, and Biology Unit 2.

Last year, French Unit 2 also recorded a 100 per cent pass rate.

Pass rates in excess of 75 per cent were recorded in all subjects areas, except Pure Math Unit 1, French Unit 1, Economics Unit 1 and Chemistry Unit 2.

Management of Business Unit 1 and History Unit 2 recorded pass rates below 75 per cent last year, but this year increased to 78 per cent and 84 per cent, respectively.

The most significant increase was in Information Technology Unit 1. Last year it recorded a 43 per cent pass rate, but this year jumped to 84 per cent.

According to a press release from Nicole Bonadie-Baker, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Education: “This year’s results show that high pass rates have been maintained or increased in the majority of subjects taken.”

The subjects taken this year included Caribbean Studies, Pure math Unit 1, Pure Math Unit 2, Communication Studies, French unit1, French Unit 2, Spanish Unit 1, Spanish Unit 2, Computer Science Unit 1, Computer Science Unit 2, Information Technology Unit 1, Sociology Unit 1, Sociology unit2, History Unit 1, History Unit 2, Literature in English Unit 1, Literature in English Unit 2, Economics Unit 1, Accounting Unit 1, Management of business Unit 1, and Environmental Science unit 1.

Other advanced proficiency subjects were taken at the Cambridge International Examinations. (JV)
