Two new medical schools for SVG

The economy of St. Vincent and the Grenadines is set to receive a boost, with the impending arrival of not one, but two medical schools.{{more}}

At a recent press conference, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves revealed that the All Saints Medical School and the American University are due to begin operations locally within the next six months.

The All Saints Medical School, which is expected to be operational by September 13, will cater to approximately 200 students.

The old location of the West St. George Secondary School is its intended location, and repairs to the site have already begun.

Currently, there are advertisments in the local media for rented accommodation for the medical students.

The American University, which was also supposed to open in September, will be arriving in January 2012.

Currently, the Trinity School of Medicine is the only medical school that operates out of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

It presently has 118 students and is expecting 40 to 50 more in September.

“We are looking forward to more of this kind of educational tourism,” said Gonsalves.

He also drew reference to Ross University in Dominica, which caters to 1,200 students.

“Imagine when you reach in those numbers how the economy would depend on them,” he said.
