Police fail to catch a scent of fugitive

The man who smeared himself with his own faeces and escaped police custody on Monday, August 16, is still at large.{{more}}

Up until press time on Wednesday, police were not able to lay a hand on Denver Oliver, who escaped from the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court shortly after he was sentenced to a six month jail sentence.

On Monday, Oliver, 36, labourer of Calliaqua, was sentenced to six months imprisonment after he was arrested and charged with the theft of one brown leather bag valued $35.75, which contained one Blackberry Bold cellular phone, other cellular phones and a charger valued at $1,620, the property of Lenny Bentick, an 18-year-old student of Calder Ridge on July 3, 2011, at Kingstown.

Oliver was also charged for entering the School for Children with Special Needs and stealing a Blackberry Torch cellular phone valued at $2,299, the property of Phedra Samuel, 47, School Principal of Fairhall, on July 25, at Kingstown.

After he was sentenced to six-month concurrent sentences, Oliver left the court room in a mess, literally!

The lanky lad told the court that he was begging Senior Magistrate Donald Browne not to send him to prison because he is often scorned there.

After he was ordered to get out of the box, Oliver defecated on himself; held it in his hand and said, “Watch here, watch here, watch way dem mek me do.”

Persons fled the courtroom while other prisoners had to be taken upstairs where the Serious Offences Court sits.

Oliver then proceeded to plaster himself with the faeces and then proceeded to cover some of the furniture and some parts of the wall with the mess.

He was ordered to go outside the courtroom, but instead, ran into the Paul’s Avenue area.

The Fire Brigade was then summoned on the scene, and members of the unit washed the courtroom with a large hose and sprinkled the floor with disinfectant chemicals. (KW)
