Haynes was awarded the scholarship during the ceremony to launch the Code for Prosecutors held at the House of Assembly Chamber on Tuesday, August 16, 2011.

“I am very humbled for the opportunity to be given a scholarship. I see it as a blessing,” Haynes told SEARCHLIGHT.

He also expressed his gratitude. “I am extremely thankful because not everybody will be afforded this opportunity in their lifetime.”

The scholarship will support a Legum Magister (LLM), a Master’s in Law degree, for one year at the University of Nottingham.

Haynes, a resident of Diamond, recently completed the Bachelor of Laws degree at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, gaining First Class Honours. Haynes was also a National Scholar.

Haynes told SEARCHLIGHT that he was recommended for the scholarship by lecturers at the university. He admitted that he was not overly confident that he would secure the scholarship, as it is highly competitive. He was, however, elated when after going through an intensive application process, he received the news that he had been awarded the scholarship.

British High Commissioner Karl Burrows stated that over 30,000 British Chevening Scholarships have been awarded over the last 26 years. He added that the scholarship is a prestigious one, aimed at awarding extraordinary individuals who have already made an impact on society.

Congratulating Haynes, Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, during his keynote address, referred to him as a product of the Education Revolution. He also described Haynes as an individual who came from humble beginnings and who has done extremely well, despite all his adversities.

Speaking of his future aspirations, Haynes said: “I just want to remain as simple as possible, but above that I want to be an individual of high moral esteem. I’m one who fears God and loves people.”

In terms of his career, he hopes to become a Judge and a writer. He is currently writing a novel based on how he overcame his adversities, which will include his interactions with other

individuals. (OS)
