Code for SVG prosecutors to be launched today

The Code for Prosecutors here in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines will be publicly launched by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions at the House of Assembly chamber, today, Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at 9:30 am.{{more}}

The Code governs the decision-making of Prosecutors, in determining whether to institute, continue or discontinue any criminal matter.

This is the first time that the principles and procedures governing the prosecutors of matters here are being published in a Code.

The purpose of the Code is to provide a code of conduct for prosecution, to promote consistent decision making at all stages of the prosecution process and to make the community aware of the way in which the system of public prosecutions operates.

Among the topics addressed in the Code are the role and ethics of the prosecutor; decision making; the full Code Test; selection of charges and the consent to prosecute.

Although the Code has been in effect since 1st October 2010, it has now been published and copies will be available to members of the public, following the launch today.

Prime Minister Dr. Ralph E. Gonsalves, who is the Minister of Legal Affairs, will be the featured speaker at the launch of the Code for prosecutors.
