Wife of deceased cop trusting in God to see her through

The wife of the police officer who was killed in a vehicular accident last week is now placing all her faith in God to see her through this difficult time in her life.{{more}}

Evelyn Bess Hull, widow of of Corporal 472 Joel “Baggy” Hull, is still trying to come to grips with the death of her husband of 10 years, after he succumbed to injuries at the Intensive Care Unit at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital.

On Thursday, July 28, Hull, 48, who had 29 years experience in the police force, was struck by a vehicle in the vicinity of P.H. Veira supermarket in Kingstown.

Speaking to SEARCHLIGHT on Wednesday, August 10, a distraught Hull said she has not been able to sleep, much less eaten properly.

“I can’t express myself…I’m just thinking after the funeral, how it will be lonely for me.”

The Kingstown Park resident, who said she had been in a relationship with Hull for 13 years before they walked down the aisle, recalled having a “wonderful” weekend, prior to the death of her husband. “We had a wonderful weekend. We just spent a lot of time together…,” Hull painfully recounted.

The parents of two children, Hull said their younger daughter, 13, only began eating again on Tuesday of this week.

Corporal Hull would have celebrated his 49th birthday on August 23.

Meanwhile, the police officers at the Calliaqua Police Station where Hull last worked are still coming to terms with the loss of a man described as “a great friend”.

Corporal Clifton Harry recalled when he first received the news he thought it was just a minor accident. “We felt really sad when we learned that it was serious…He was just a cool, calm character who had a funny side to him,” Harry stated.

Harry recalled the same day Hull was involved in the accident, Hull asked him where he was going. “I was going to speak to some kids in Belair, and he asked what was it about, and I said road safety…that’s the last thing I said to my friend,” Harry said.

Brother of the deceased, Station Sergeant Owen Williams, is still coming to grips with his sibling’s loss. “I still can’t believe he’s gone. He was an easy going man who always wore a smile on his face and never seemed upset,” Williams said.

Williams said when he visited his brother at the hospital, he tried speaking to him, but Hull never responded.

Inspector and prosecutor at the Serious Offences Court Adolphus Delpesche also shared memories of his beloved friend.

Describing Hull as a “cool man” who never seemed to get upset at anything, Delpesche recalled one time while conducting a moot court proceeding at the Serious Offences Court Hull played the role of an accused called “Joe-Bob”, whom he said was a character around Kingstown. “Hull played that role just as Joe Bob used to do and it is from that time on I started calling him Joe Bob,” Delpesche recalled.

Delpesche said although Hull was very sociable and friendly, he always took his work seriously. “He was a very knowledgeable man and knew what he was supposed to do…,” he added.

Meanwhile, 33-year-old Stanrod Henry of Fair Hall appeared at the Serious Offences Court on Monday, August 8, and was granted $30,000 bail. He is charged with causing the death of Hull by dangerous driving. He has to report to the Calliaqua Police Station on Mondays and Fridays, and was ordered to surrender his travel documents.

Hull will be laid to rest tomorrow at the New Testament Church of God at Wilson Hill.
