LIME hosts scores of young Internet gurus

This country’s premiere telecommunications provider, LIME, is again hosting hundreds of enthusiastic Internet gurus this summer at its Arnos Vale compound conference room from August 2 to 30.{{more}}

Internet Summer school started eight years ago with over 250 students between the ages seven to 18 years. This year, it is expected that over 400 students will be accommodated along with retirees who have shown an interest in information technology over the last two years of the programme. The programme will see a new approach as LIME will take it to several rural communities.

Organizer of the event and Head of Human Resources, Sandra Matthews, commented: “This is our way of giving back to society and assisting with the education and exposure of everyone to the Internet. Our objectives are to provide students with an overview of the Internet and the World Wide Web, with emphasis on the benefits of Internet, function of email and search engines; enabling our students to access Internet based current awareness tools such as News, Entertainment and Education Resources, and to provide an opportunity for students to visit an Internet Service Provider and get a firsthand look its operations.”

Acting General Manager Leslie Jack was full of praise for the summer program. He said: “The future of the country is in the hands of the young ones who will be attending this summer program. When we started this program eight years ago, we anticipated that this program will become a regular fixture on our yearly program of activities. Parents and students look forward to taking part, and it is now part of corporate social responsibility to deliver this program every summer. It is quite heartening to see the numbers of retirees who have signed up again, which shows the thirst for information. Additionally, with the one lap top per child initiative, we expect that young students in the rural communities will turn out and take full advantage of this wonderful opportunity.”

In addition to the base location at the LIME Arnos Vale conference room, four rural communities, namely Chateaubelair, Layou, Colonarie and Mesopotamia Resource Centers, have been added as venues for the program. The plan is to expand the program into the Grenadines next year. This year’s graduation will take place on September 1 and will see just over 400 students and 20 retirees receiving certificates.
