Canouan Government School under reconstruction

If all goes according to schedule, the students of the Canouan Government School will be returning to school in the new term to find that their place of learning has undergone a pleasant transformation.{{more}}

In conjunction with the Ministry of Education, the Caribbean Construction Association (CCA) pledged $350,000 to the refurbishment of the school, which is already underway.

The refurbishment will include repairing the broken retaining wall, completing fencing of the compound, re-tiling bathroom walls, replacing fans and air-conditioning units, landscaping, and installing playground equipment.

Headteacher Jacqueline Charles expressed her gratitude to all those who made this venture possible, and expressed how pleased she was with the progress so far.

“We look forward to a new school term with a new environment,” she enthused.

Charles acknowledged that the Ministry of Education, in fulfilling its duties, cannot meet all the needs of all schools at all times, so she welcomed the investment from the private stakeholder, and encouraged others to follow suit.

“This is showing what caring stakeholders should do!”

Helen Child, the CCA public relations coordinator, said this project was part of the company’s “contribution to the development of Canouan”.

“Today’s children are tomorrow’s men and women,” she asserted.

Child also thanked everyone involved in the project for taking time out of their busy schedules to “donate their special skills”.

Charles Samuel, technical vocational officer within the Ministry of Education, also gave brief remarks.

He thanked the CCA for “taking this initiative” to re-fit the primary school, so that students are afforded a “more hospitable environment in which to live, grow and learn”.(JV)
