Leacock, speaking at a New Democratic Party press conference on Monday, July 18, at Democrat House in Kingstown, said that members of the ruling Unity Labor Party who had lost their 2010 election bid or had not contested the elections are now better off than before.
âWe just had an election, and every single member of the ULP who lost their seat or who were not able to contest a seat is now better offâ¦.â
âIn North Leeward, over the weekend, I heard Mr. (Jerrol) Thompson saying that he runs a department that he has lost⦠Mr. (Louis) Straker is now the head of National Properties.â
âIn South Leeward, The man (Douglas Slater) did not contest; he is the Foreign Affairs Minister.â
âMr. (Edwin) Snagg in the Grenadines is in a better position than Dr. (Godwin) Friday and Terrence Ollivierre.â
ââ¦I am sorry for my good friend Mr. (Conrad) Sayers in Central Kingstown; he is the only one who does not hold any post that I am aware of, and I will have to look out for him.â
The parliamentarian also noted that the salaries of these persons are for the most part higher than that of Cabinet Ministers.
Leacock also used the opportunity to take a swipe at the local media.
âThese are questions that an effective media will present or represent on behalf of the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadinesâ¦. I find the New Democratic Party, we seem to have to work overtime to get publication issues properly explainedâ¦.â (JJ)
