CYEN-SVG campers converting trash to cash
Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN-SVG) has executed a four-day environmenal vacation programme on the Island of Canouan.{{more}}
The programme ran from Friday, July 15 to Monday, July 18, 2011, under the theme âconverting trash to cashâ. The programme was part funded by the Ministry of Social Development, Communiy Development Division under their Annual Summer Programme Funding.
A total of 16 children from Canouan between the ages of four and 14 years, and 12 CYEN-SVG members participated in the programmeâs daily activities. A number of presentations were made on various topics including: good garbge disposal practices, the importance of Resusing, Reducing and Recycling, negative actions that contribute to climate change and ozone depletion, and how these actions can be corrected.
There was an art and craft component of the programme that transformed items considered trash into craft items that can be sold to generate cash. The finished products included: convenient baskets and pencil holders made from toilet paper roll, table mats made from news papers and house decorations made from old CDâs.
On the evening of Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17, members of CYEN-SVG partnered with members of the Canouan Island Council and other residents of Canouan to conduct two clean up exercises.
The programme ended on Monday 18 with the presention of certificates and other prizes to participants.
Yoland London, Coordinator of CYEN-SVG CYEN-SVG expressed the view that the programmeâs main objective of creating awareness on the importance of our fragile environment and how we as individuals can play our part in ensuring environmental sustainability, was met.
