Ricky Burnett sworn in as newest magistrate

After weeks of speculation, former Deputy Registrar Ricky Burnett was sworn in as this country’s newest magistrate yesterday, Monday, July 18.{{more}}

The ceremony, which took place at Government House, was witnessed by Governor General Sir Frederick Ballantyne, Acting Prime Minister Girlyn Miguel, Chief Justice Frederick Bruce-Lyle, Chief Magistrate Donald Browne and members of Burnett’s family.

Miguel, in her remarks, said that the entire community of Marriaqua was proud of the accomplishment.

She spoke of the working relationship with Burnett on the Board of the Marriaqua Friendly Society (Bunpan), noting that all the work in the past was in preparation for proud moments.

Burnett was called to the Bar in 2007, but has been working in this country’s judiciary system since joining the High Court Registry in 1984 as a junior clerk.

Since then Burnett has worked his way to the top.

Chief Justice Bruce-Lyle said that when Burnett told him that he was reading Law, he (Bruce-Lyle) said to him that one day he would be sitting in his chair.

“You have come this way through hard work and dedication,” Justice Bruce-Lyle said, adding that Burnett’s rise to the top was as a result of his good use of his working environment to enhance himself.

Burnett himself acknowledged the day as being very special.

He pledged to continue to be a hard worker and to deliver to the people quality justice. (DD)
