The four students are Shaquille Shortte of the Thomas Saunders Secondary; Shariel Bowman, Mountain View Academy; Nikita Philips, Bishopâs College and Lisa Hussain, West St George Secondary. They were selected from the 31 applications received.
Tonya Fraser, Marketing Manager (Ag), said that the thinking behind inviting students to apply for an internship was to educate young people on the work of the organisation.
âWe felt there was a lack of understanding in the general population as to what Invest SVG does,â Fraser explained.
The other reason was the lack of knowledge among students of what it takes in the world of work.
âEmployers are always looking for experience. Thatâs the only thing they keep asking for,â Fraser said.
Shana Browne, Export Development Officer, added that one of the objectives of the internship was to offer students another career path.
âBecause everybody pushes to be a doctor or lawyer,â Browne said.
The process was taken very seriously, Browne added, saying that applicants were interviewed.
âThis is definitely a stepping stone for when they enter the work place,â she explained.
Lisa Hussain said that she liked the idea that the requirements for the internship resembled that of the real workplace.
âI am really excited to see what I will be doing,â Hussain said, adding that she was already having a good time.
âThe experience here is good,â she continued.
The internship ends on August 5. (DD)
