Shearman is Valedictorian of Belmont Gov’t School

Valedictorian Omelia Shearman acknowledged that her time at the Belmont Government School was mixed with good and bad times, but the school’s top student is grateful for the encouragement and support she received.{{more}}

Shearman, on behalf of the 24 other students graduating with her, thanked teachers, parents and guardians, and other persons who made their time at the school a memorable occasion, and especially for the encouragement at the just concluded Common Entrance Examinations.

The Graduation ceremony, which took place on Wednesday, June 29, at the Belmont Seventh Day Adventist Church, saw the students receiving their certificates, along with gifts and prizes for the outstanding graduating students as well as the top performers in the other classes.

Shearman received awards for excellence in Mathematics, English Language and General Paper, which were presented by members of the graduating class of 1986.

Also present at the ceremony and making remarks was Marla Nanton, representing the Ministry of Education, and John Woodley, who spoke on behalf or Area Representative Cecil Mckie.

Past teacher and stalwart in the area Amanda David delivered the featured address, in which she implored the students to, among other things, take God seriously and to keep their bodies pure.

Headteacher Godwyn Gibson, in giving his report, reminded the students that their journey had just begun and that they were to at all times strive for excellence.

In an emotional interlude during the ceremony, the assembly paid a minute of silence in memory of former student Aldon Richards, who committed suicide in the first term of the school year.(JJ)
