Queeley dominates Miss Carival 2k11
She came, she saw, and Miss St Kitts and Nevis Iantavian Queeley most definitely conquered her competition at this yearâs First Citizenâs Miss Carival pageant.{{more}}
On Friday, July 1, Queeley lived up to her promise of taking the crown back to her homeland, after a 14-year absence.
No stranger to pageantry, she said that she was âsatisfiedâ with her performance on the night, and added: âI was very surprised but also excited that I can be the one to bring the crown back… after all these years.â
Queeley also said that she will be using her latest win as âa platform to promote the performing artsâ.
The 23-year-old almost made a clean sweep of the awards; only leaving Miss Congeniality and Best Interview for the other contestants.
She suitably impressed the photographers who voted her Miss Photogenic; and left the audience gasping in a bejewelled ice blue swimsuit that won her Best Swimwear.
She won Best Talent with an emotion-filled creative dance piece titled âWalk On Byâ, which highlighted the plight of the homeless.
She also took Best Swimwear with a sea green sequined dress that hugged her curves and flattered her skin tone.
Miss Congeniality was won by Miss Barbados Brittany Worrell; and Miss Anguilla Shellya Rogers won Best Interview for her well-spoken responses.
Rogers was also judged second runner-up; which won her US$700 and gifts from local business places.
Miss St. Vincent and the Grenadines Aviar Charles, who placed first runner-up, was unable to keep the crown at home this year, but nonetheless gave the winner a run for her money.
Charles – who won US$1,300 and other gifts – impressed the crowd with her figure-hugging swimsuit and evening gown, her interview responses; and also left patrons in fits of laughter with a witty monologue about the âold time daysâ in the Talent segment.
Queeley will go on to represent St. Kitts and Nevis at the Miss Caribbean Jaycees Pageant to be held in Antigua on July 29.
She won US$4,300 and a 32-inch flat screen television, which was donated by Carl Munro, of Standard Caribbean Shippers, New York.
In an interview on Kittitian news website SKN Vibes, Queeleyâs chaperone Ozelle Martin said that she and the recently crowned Miss Carival 2011 put in a lot of work in preparation for the competition.
âNot only did we practice but we also strategised. I did research on her fellow contestants,â said Martin, who owns Glittering Reign Pageant Coaching and Consulting.
âWe did our best to get videos of past pageants to look at her competitionâs previous performances. Once you know your competitors, youâll know how to defeat them…. thatâs one of the premier reasons why she is now Miss Carival.â
This makes it the fifth time that a representative from St. Kitts and Nevis won the competition – the last time being in 1997 with Gloria Esdale.
