At a press conference on Monday, May 30, the Executive announced that members will receive up to 50 per cent discounts in some cases for their purchases from these businesses, which had been approached by the Union in an effort to not only to ease the economic strains on teachers, but also to the benefit of the business houses.
According to Second Vice President Rawle Caine, some of the business offering discounts include Peopleâs Pharmacy, who will give 5% on over the counter purchases and 10% on prescriptions; SVG Tire Sales and Services 15%; Metrocint General Insurances 30 – 50% on motor vehicle coverage; O.T. tyre shop 10-15% on all new tire purchases; Brewsterâs Auto Supplies 10%; C.K Greaves/ Sunrise Supermarket 5%; The Beauty Shop 12%; Dasco Pharmacy 10% on prescriptions; Trotmans Electronics 10 -15%; GEC Auto 10%; Haddies Dental 11%; Chawaâs Beauty Salon 15-20%.
Union President Ronald Clarke announced that the list was not complete, since there were a number of other businesses which had been approached and expressed interest in coming on board.
He noted that final negotiations are still underway.
Clarke also announced that a new l Continued from page 40
membership card will be issued to current members of the Union, which will be used along with the National identification cards when they are making purchases.
The new cards, he said, are being issued so that persons who are not in proper financial standings with the Union would not benefit in the same way as those who are.
âWe strongly believe that if you are not a member of the Union that you should not benefit from the services of the Union, because it is totally unfair that persons would sacrifice to pay their dues and persons who do not do anything will have the benefits that members are having.â
The executive also announced that the Unionâs website: www.svgtu.com will also be up and running sometime soon, with an official launch to take place when it is ready.
