Mitchell-Joseph calls for more protection of SVG’s cultural/historical sites
Chairman of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines National Trust Louise Mitchell-Joseph is of the view that more should be done to protect the cultural and historic sites in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.{{more}}
Mitchell-Joseph expressed her views on the issue at the opening of the Preparatory International Assessable Workshop, funded by UNESCO at the National Insurance Services Training Room on Monday, May 24, 2011.
Mitchell-Joseph stated that not much has been done in terms of establishing protected heritage sites, adding that in 1791, the Kings Hill Forest in South Windward was declared a forest reserve, and the last conservation site was declared in 1987. Nothing, she emphasized has been done since then.
Mitchell Joseph referred to many of the conservation areas in St. Vincent as âpaper parksâ, explaining that they are only declared protected sites in legislation, but in reality, they enjoy little or no protection. She listed examples such as the South Coastal Marine Conservation area, where fishing, though it is prohibited, is practised.
She added that the National Trust will work along with all other relevant ministries to ensure the continued conservation of heritage sites in St. Vincent.(OS)
