As the 2011 hurricane begins, the local Meteorological (Met) Office is once again urging the Vincentian populace to be prepared, should we be impacted by any severe weather system.
According to a release from the Met Office, so far this year, we have had a rather âwetâ dry season and we have seen the damage that the heavy rains in April caused to the northeastern part of the island. We should let this be a reminder to us of the vulnerability of our island to any severe weather event.
âWhile we pay close attention to this yearâs predictions, we must also be mindful that it only takes a direct hit from one storm or hurricane to cause major damage and hardship on island states,â the release from the Met Office said.
âWe continue to urge persons to stay tuned to your local radio and television stations for all the latest updates on the weather systems.
âThe Meteorological Office will continue to monitor the weather systems as they traverse the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. We are continuing to work very closely with NEMO and other agencies to ensure that information is disseminated to the public in a timely manner.
âWe encourage all citizens to please be prepared.â
