LIME has teamed up with the Carribean Association of National Telecommunication Organizations (CANTO) and SaskTel International (SI) to donate ten computers and Internet access to children and women prisoners in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.{{more}} This collaboration comes under the Connecting the Caribbean Partnership organized by CANTO.
LIME, a full service telecommunications provider operating in 13 islands throughout the Caribbean, has been extremely busy giving back and connecting with needy persons in the communities. Recently the company installed free wireless internet services in rural communities north of the island which were struck by recent disasters.
SaskTel International has been delivering software solutions and ICT consulting to service providers for twenty-five years. Based in Saskatchewan, Canada, SIâs ICT Consulting division has worked in over 30 countries across six continents.
âSaskTel International has been working in the Caribbean for many years,â said Steve Sousa, SaskTel International President and COO. âThis shipment of 10 laptop computers to help local St. Vincent and the Grenadines organizations is a way for us to give something back to a region that has provided many opportunities to SaskTel International and its employees.â
CANTO is based in Trinidad and was founded in 1985 as a nonprofit association of telephone operating companies in the Caribbean. CANTOâs objective is to establish a forum through which Caribbean Telecommunication Organizations may exchange information and expertise pertaining to the telecommunications field, generate inputs for orderly growth of the sectors, formulate policy and consider matters of mutual interest to its members.
General Secretary Regenie Fraser said âCANTO is pleased to facilitate this venture through its members SaskTel International and LIME St.Vincent & the Grenadines for the youth of St. Vincent & the Grenadines. This donation of computers project lends credence to the CANTO Connect the Caribbean Initiative by providing the youth of the region with avenues for staying connected in a connected world.â
At the laptop presentation ceremony on DATE LIME General Manager Angus Steele said he was pleased to be associated with this project and expressed the view that ICT and learning have no boundaries.
Steele said âWhen we looked at the institutions that are benefiting from the donation of these ten computers and internet access, we see early childhood centers, the needy, and persons on reform in prisons. These are the persons that society usually forgets but we can make a difference to their lives by exposing them to the world of ICT.â
The handing over ceremony took place at the LIME Corporate Office in Kingstown and saw representation from members of the female prisons, St Benedict Day Nursery and Bysave.
