Six young poets participated in a poetry competition organized by Heather Stewart, a member of the church and District Commissioner for the North Leeward Guides and Brownies. The participants were asked to write a poem intended for their mother, expressing their honest thoughts and feeling of their motherâs love for them.
The poets read and presented the poems to their mothers who were in their company at church for the occasion. This was a moving gesture for the congregation and the parties involved. However, an interesting observation was made; none of the participants were males. While it is expected that only females would participate on behalf of the Guides and Brownies, it was evident that the males were not represented in Sunday School. The participants who are not members of the Sunday school were given the chance to participate at a relatively short notice. Members of the audience were given the role to identify the outstanding pieces that were presented. One member, Joe Findley, a former teacher, suggested that all the poets did well and that they were all winners. Hence, the following six participants were awarded a small token for their efforts: Emily Edwards, Kaylisa Laborde, Meliny Hoyte, Jamelia Grant, Kemeila Grant, Jameila Morris.
A request was made by congregational steward Velma Stephens to repeat the gesture. Petula Edwards was awarded for being the youngest mother, while Vernie Jeffery received the prize for being the oldest mother.
A gift was also presented to a mother who was attending the church for the first time.
The Sunday Schoolâs Fun Day will be held on May 28th, 2011, at the Layou playing field, and Brownies Sports Day on June 18 at the Petit Bordel playing field, both starting at 10:00 am. The general public is invited to participate.
