UWI Open Campus to host a lecture on Pan-Africanism
The University of the West Indies Open Campus will host a lecture later this week, as part of its activities to observe the United Nationâs declaration of 2011 as the International Year for People of African descent.{{more}}
The lecture, entitled: âNo Matter Where You Come From: Pan-Africanism in Caribbean Popular Culture,â will be held at the Methodist Church Hall at 7 pm, on Thursday, May 12.
The lecturer is Professor Carolyn Cooper, who is a Professor of Literary and Cultural Studies in the Department of Literatures in English, at the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies. Professor Cooper is the author of a number of scholarly works and is also a columnist with the Jamaica Gleaner newspaper.
Her research interests span a wide range of areas relating to popular culture, including Dance Hall Culture and Reggae Studies. Included also among her areas of interest are Nation language, Caribbean Literary works (her Ph.D dissertation was on the work of Derek Walcott) and Gender Affairs.
She is also a frequent presenter on the lecture circuit in Jamaica, the wider Caribbean and outside the region. Professor Cooper is dynamic and articulate and tells it like it is.
