Jennifer Marshall, Counsellor at the West St.George Secondary School, who joined her colleagues in staging the event, said each year the students look forward to the programme with great anticipation and this yearâs programme, held on Tuesday, April 19, has incorporated all students from forms one to five. The previous career day programmes targeted students from Form 3 to 5.
This yearâs event saw representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Agency for Public Information, VINLEC, the St.Vincent and the Grenadines Coast Guard, FirstCaribbean International Bank, among others, sensitizing students about the various careers which they can pursue in their organizations.
Marshall said that some professionals were unable to attend the event, but efforts are being made to have them make presentations at other intervals throughout the school year.
âWe hope that students will have a better knowledge of what is happening in certain fields. We are not trying to fool ourselves and trying to say that they will learn everything in one day,â said Marshall, noting that the programme is designed to encourage students to think and to conduct research as well.
Marshall praised the counselling committee at the school for staging the programme. She also lauded VINLEC for mentoring the students on an ongoing basis as well as the representatives of the organizations that participated in Tuesdayâs exercise.
Joel Quammie, a Form 2 student, said he had the opportunity to visit several booths, but he paid particular attention to the presentation delivered by officers of the St.Vincent and the Grenadines Coast Guard. He said that he would like to pursue a career in the Coast Guard.
Rudolph Quashie, another Form 2 student, expressed similar sentiments to Quammie. He stated that his desire is to become a Coast Guard officer.
Nyesha Toby told SEARCHLIGHT that she used the opportunity to visit booths which highlighted careers in arts and craft, VINLEC, the Ministry of Agriculture and the St.Vincent and the Grenadines Coast Guard.
âThe Career Day has increased my knowledge and has helped me to understand what a number of fields are really about,â said Toby.
