Unusual corn plants causing stir in Stoney Gound
The little plot of land owned by Randolph âPinchumâ âBest Dressedâ George has become an area of amusement as unusual corn plants have grown there, attracting many questions from neighbours and passers by.{{more}}
George, who resides at Stoney Ground, told Searchlight that he planted the corn seeds about three months ago, gave them banana fertilizer once, and watered them regularly.
One of the corn plants grew 8 feet 6 inches tall, an anomaly George says he has never seen in all his 52 years.
âWell, I fed up answer people,â George said, adding that many persons have inquired as to what kind of plant it is, as George says they are amazed by the height of the plant.
George, however, told Searchlight another possible reason for the cropâs growth.
âThe man who had left this house here, he was a very tall man; he was about 7 something in height. So I donât know if the Almighty is giving a sign to remember the man – Mr. Edwards,â he said.
Another one of Georgeâs corn plants produced five ears of corn where only one would usually grow. Playfully referring to the plant as five finger corn, George stated that he was going to cut down the plant as it took some time before it bore the corn. He, however, changed his mind.
Yet another one of Georgeâs corn plants produced a long corn, measuring 18 inches in length. George, who said he was amazed by the length of the corn, reiterated that in all his 52 years he has never seen such a corn.
Allan Williams, an official of the Agriculture Unit at Dumbarton, told Searchlight via e-mail that the growth shown by the plants is uncommon and happens every now and then, though the reason for the unusual growth could not be given.
This is not the first time that George has produced abnormal vegetables. Back in 1998, George said he âscatteredâ pumpkin seeds on his cousinâs land at Old Montrose after he had ploughed it. George stated that the vine grew and produced an âugly lookingâ pumpkin that was rough and bumpy.
He added that many were scared of the unusual pumpkin, but he merely thought of it as a gift from God. Others told him not to eat it, but George did, and said that it was delicious, adding that he felt much healthier afterwards.
âI find I put on weight,â George said, laughing.
