Toastmasters Glenda Matthews, Roosevelt John are Speaking champs
Toastmaster Glenda Matthews of the Achievers Toastmasters Club defeated seven other contestants in the Local Toastmasters Speech Contest, while Toastmaster Roosevelt John of the Imperial Champions Toastmasters Club defeated two others in the Table Topics Contest on Sunday, April 3, at the Venezuelan Institute.{{more}} They will compete at the District Level next month in Tortola at the District 81 May Conference, which will be held from May 20- 23, 2011.
The participants in the International Speech Contest had to prepare and speak on an original topic for 5-7 minutes. The Table Topics speakers had to give an impromptu speech lasting no longer than two minutes.
Other participants in the speech and table topics contest were: Nigel Scott, Haydeen Charles, Inga Jackson, Arlette Miller, Afzal Abdul, Roseanne Russell and Janice McMaster.
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines make up part of District 81, Area 20, of the millions of Toastmasters worldwide. There has been considerable growth in the number of Toastmasters clubs here, with the numbers growing to four clubs and soon will extend to Mustique.
At the Annual District 81 May Conference in Tortola, 15 countries will compete, with hopes of making it to the International Speech Contest that will take place at the Toastmasters International Speech Convention in Ballyâs, Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Nevada, from August 17 – 20, 2011. Nine finalists from this contest will then vie for the title of âWorld Champion of Public Speaking.
