SJCK Young Leaders assist Pole Yard residents with water conservation
For years, persons have been wondering how the residents of Pole Yard were surviving without access to fresh water. This is also a question that has worried the Young Leaders of the St. Josephâs Convent Kingstown.{{more}}
With that question in mind, the young fourth-formers journeyed to the area in Arnos Vale. The purpose of that visit was to educate the residents on how to purify water, by using a piece of cloth that acts as a filter to separate water from sediment. Also, persons in the area were informed that boiling the water will kill bacteria and make it more potable. They were also introduced to a water harvesting system. This is a system that allows rain water to be collected from house roofs in a safe manner, so that it can be used.
As a gesture of goodwill, persons in the area were given one gallon of bottled water, which they received with open arms. Special attention was given to households with children.
A survey was also carried out in the area to ascertain the feelings of residents who do not have access to drinking water. Many persons expressed sadness at the fact that they felt less than human without this âpriceless commodityâ.
As the young leaders were leaving, they noticed that the Central Water and Sewage Authority (CWSA) was arranging the installation of pipes to bring water to the area. With the help of the donations of water from the SJCKYL and the CWSA, the persons in Pole Yard now have drinking water.
