Prison count stands at 417 at close of Assizes
At the close of the Criminal Assizes at the High Court on Wednesday, April 5, the prison population stands at 417.{{more}}
The figures presented by Chief Prison Officer Brian Andrews revealed that there are 304 males penal, while 102 males remain on remand. There are three females penal, while five other females are on remand.
A total of 123 males were sentenced by the High Court, while the Magistratesâ Court sentenced 181. Females sentenced by the High Court recorded figures of 3, while none were sentenced by the Magistrates Court.
Thirty seven males are currently awaiting trial, while 65 males await Preliminary Investigation. Awaiting trial on murder charges are 34 males, while eight remain in custody awaiting preliminary investigations on murder charges.
There are 16 non-nationals at the prison. Five are from Trinidad, five from Grenada, two from Barbados, three from St Lucia ,and one Guyanese.
Eleven non-natonals are awaiting Preliminary Investigations.
Shorn Samuel and Patrick Lovelace are the only two inmates on death row.
