Over 100 children, drawn from the East Kingstown constituency, participated in the camp, which ran from March 30 to April,1 at the CW Prescod School.
The effort was supported and guided directly by Luke Browne, the Unity Labour Partyâs (ULP) caretaker for the East Kingstown Constituency, though he is overseas, and the ULP East Kingstown Constituency Council.
The campers were provided with the opportunity to interact with Colin Williams, Director of Public Prosecutions, on day one. They also learnt about saving, cooking and craft. They engaged in sports and games sessions, and a field trip which included an educational tour of the international airport construction site.
The opening ceremony on March 30, 2011, was addressed by Frederick Stephenson, Minister of National Mobilisation etc, who noted in his brief address that the initiative was timely.
Though the camp ended on Friday, April 1, 2011, the children gathered again on Sunday, April 3, 2011, to attend a 9:00 a.m. church service, and for a closing ceremony in the afternoon.
Senator Elvis Charles of the ULP, who contested the Central Kingstown seat in the December 2010 General Elections, addressed the closing ceremony and explained to the children the importance of âSelf-Helpâ to combat resource constraints.
Urshammah Henry, President of East Kingstown Unity Youths, said that the Kids Club is meant to address social and economic inequalities and give children the opportunity to find themselves.
âWe make an important investment in the future and itâs not a one off business,â said Henry, adding, âWe will now spend time planning future programmes so that children could maximise the school term and vacations. This is in the nationâs interest.â
She said Luke Browne is not just a caretaker in name. Henry said the Kids Club is a part of a programme that Browne expects to carry on over the next five years.
âHe takes care of this constituency. He has our loyal support,â said Henry.
Henry thanked everyone who contributed to the success of the camp, including well-wishers and volunteers. She also thanked organisations and citizens who provided material and financial support that helped to enrich the lives of children.â
The Kid Club initiative was designed and executed by the East Kingstown Unity Youths.
