The organization founded by Adonal Foyle, a Vincentian basketballer who played several years in the NBA, raised $21,122.
âWhat a wonderful birthday present for me,â said Foyle of the achievement.
Foyle, who is the President of Kerosene Lamp Foundation, expressed thanks to the following persons for helping his organization meet its goal, namely: Doug Chiarello, Jane Chisaki, Manuel Del Dago, Marcia & Bill Duckworth (2nd donation), Junior D. Fletcher, Brad Johnson (2nd donation), Larry Lewis and Jamelyn Pardinez.
The Kerosene Lamp Foundation has been conducting several initiatives in St.Vincent and the Grenadines to empower youths here to develop a passion for basketball, learning and to become literate adults through various activities.
To this end, it has established its first Reading and Learning Centre at Canouan Government School (CGS). The Centre is equipped with a range of books, along with supplementary learning equipment, including computers, a television, DVD player, and assorted educational flash cards and board games to supplement the childrenâs formal academic experience.
The Kerosene Lamp Foundation has established a fund to annually reward the highest achieving graduating student at the Canouan Government School that goes on to secondary school. The Kerosene Lamp Foundation states that Canouan is in particular need of this support, as the island does not have a secondary school and children must move to Union Island, mainland St. Vincent or overseas, in order to continue their education.
The Foundation also conducts the Athletics & Academics Island Camps. The organzation also partners with the Adult & Continuing Education Department of SVGâs Ministry of Education to motivate out-of-school youths (aged 15-27) to take classes to improve their reading skills.
