Vincentian tops ACCA June 2010 Examinations

“I am going to change the world.” Those were the words of Vincentian Hannah Laidlow as she addressed fellow graduates at a recently held Recognition Ceremony, jointly hosted by ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) and ICATT (the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Trinidad and Tobago) at the Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence in Trinidad.{{more}}

Laidlow, who was the overall top performer in the professional module of the June 2010 ACCA Examinations, sought to inspire her fellow graduates to make positive and meaningful use of the skills and knowledge they now have and to strive to be the best that they could be. She urged: “Success comes with strong will and the determination to know what you want as well as the ability to do what it takes to achieve it. Succeeding at whatever goal you want to achieve takes resolve, commitment and hard work. You not only have to believe in yourself, but also that you can do it.”

Hannah is currently an Auditor at V.A. Barnwell Associates in St. Vincent and enjoys the challenges being auditor brings. She fully recognises the value that ACCA can add to her career and remarked “ACCA has afforded me many uplifting opportunities, increased bargaining power and, most of all, improved self confidence.” She continued: “A career in Finance has the potential to be very lucrative. It requires hard work and dedication, but can bring substantial rewards.”

Commenting on her noteworthy exam success she added: “Finding the right balance is very important. For me, it was God, exercise and study. Having strong family support also helps.” Hannah went on to say: “The key is to stick with it. I failed two papers, cried a lot, but after that, I knew I could do better and decided then and there that I really needed to make completing ACCA my first priority. I opted to resign my then position as an accounting clerk and finish the professional module in Trinidad, a decision I do not regret.”

As an affiliate, Hannah’s journey is not yet over, since her ultimate goal is to attain ACCA membership. She firmly believes that this will open more doors and provide many more opportunities.

Maria Batson, Manager for ACCA Eastern Caribbean, congratulated Hannah on her achievements and remarked: “Hannah has proven that with commitment, self-discipline and determination, the ACCA qualification while challenging is quite achievable. She focused on her goal, and even when faced with difficulty, reassessed her position, refocused and did not give up. I congratulate her and wish her all the best on her journey towards attaining ACCA membership.”
