On Wednesday, January 26, Pastor Nixon Louis, Intern Pastor of the Eastern District; Beulah Samuel, Co-ordinator of the Calder SDA special needs programme; and Claydon Ollivierre, First Elder of the Calder SDA Church, presented a cheque for $1,000 to Patricia Cumberbatch, President of the NSPD.
Pastor Louis said the Calder Seventh Day Adventist Church desires to make its programme, which caters for persons with disabilities, a continuous one.
He said since 2008, the church has been staging a programme each year that invites persons with special needs from throughout the country and their families to a special appreciation event.
âIf Christ was here we would have been doing more. As followers of Christ, meeting the needs of persons with disabilities is something engrained in us,â said Louis.
He added when the church staged the appreciation worship session recently for persons with disabilities, his heart was overjoyed; but, there was some pain âthat we couldnât say rise up and walk.â
Louis told Cumberbatch that there will be hurdles and challenges in the NSPD path as efforts are made to have better conditions for the persons that it represents.
To this end, he encouraged Cumberbatch to call on the Calder SDA Church at any time and let the organization know how it can assist.
Samuel, who started the appreciation programme, said the Calder SDA Church recognized the efforts that the NSPD is making on behalf of the persons that it represents.
âWe want to see how we can ease the pain of persons with disabilities. Our gift is small, but with God it can go a far way,â said Samuel.
Cumberbatch, accepting the cheque, responded: âIt may seem little for you, but it is huge for us.â
She said in the current global economic climate, the funds will go a long way in staging the NSPD programme for 2011. (HN)
