Political Party supporters take to the streets

As the debate over the Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure took place at the House of Assembly last Thursday, outside the building, another battle was taking place between supporters of the Unity Labour Party (ULP) and those of the New Democratic Party (NDP).{{more}}

Despite the sweltering sun, many braved it and shielded themselves with umbrellas, in solidarity with their respective parties.

The crowds had gathered in answer to calls made by both parties. the NDP had called out its faithful to protest the proposed amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code and the Representation of the People Act, while the ULP supporters came out to show support for the government.

With placard-bearing supporters from the NDP stationed directly in front of the Vegetable market and ULP supporters on the other side of the road, words were thrown across the road, from side to side, like missiles.

“Go home, all yuh look silly. All yuh go still get the poor relief money. De world is watching and it is embarrassing,” shouted an NDP supporter.

Firing back, a fiery ULP supporter shouted, “All yo so stupid and dunce. It is five more years of the ULP!”

A fight nearly broke out between two female supporters, one from either party, close to the pedestrian crossing in front of Coreas City Store. However, it was quickly scrapped by the swift action of police officers on the scene.

Sharing his views, Calypsonian Robert ‘Patches’ Knights described the move by the government to introduce the Bills as “atrocious” and said that such a move is not in the best interest of the people.

“As a result of this, I am here and I will not succumb to any dictatorial actions by any politician. I am totally against this,” he stated.

Describing herself as a staunch supporter of the governing administration, Marilyn Cruickshank told SEARCHLIGHT that she does not see a problem with the legislation. She declared that she is standing firm behind the prime minister and standing up for the poor, young and middle-aged of St Vincent.

Another man said, “I can’t mek one man dictate my rights and freedom. The PM took the powers and put it in the DPP (Director of Public Prosecution) hand and I will not be supporting this Bill.”

Elsa Daniel of Barrouallie said were it not for the PM, St Vincent would sink.

“We spent 17 years in the backyard under the NDP, whey we want to go back there for? Eustace can’t do nothing for SVG,” she declared.

The amendments of the Bills did not come up for debate on Thursday, as expected. Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves said they will not be dealt with until after the Budget debate. (KW)
