Journalists complete training course in disaster reporting
12 journalists from the Caribbean, Central and South America successfully completed a one-week training course in crisis and disaster reporting.{{more}}
The course, organized by the Thomson Reuters Foundation was held at the Homewood Suites Hilton in Miami, Florida and facilitated by seasoned Reuters journalists Tim Large and Katherine Baldwyn from the United Kingdom based news agency.
They were assisted by a numbers of persons from a number of organizations and institutions, who along with Large and Baldwyn assisted the journalists in honing their skills in press conference coverage, interviews, reporting in the field and editing, through a number of theoretical and practical sessions.
The crises in Caribbean nation Haiti, in particular the January 12 earthquake, were the focus of a number of the exercises.
The Thomson Reuters foundation is the charitable arm of the Reuters News Agency, with a mandate to save lives in disasters and improve the standards of journalism around the world among other objectives.
Last weekâs exercise was just one of a series of its kind that the organizations holds from time to time.
The countries represented at this course were Antigua and Barbuda, Jamaica, Guyana, Guatemala, Paraguay, Haiti, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines was represented by Junior Jarvis of Searchlight.(JJ)
