Book on Public Sector internet abuse launched in SVG

A new book, entitled “Organizational Misbehaviour: Internet Abuse Among Public Sector Workers In St. Vincent And The Grenadines”, will be launched here tomorrow, January 26.{{more}}

It was written and published by former Senior Nursing Officer (Principal) Sylvia E. Williams.

A launching ceremony will take place at the Peace Memorial Hall at 4:30 p.m.

Although the subject is a relatively new concept, Williams outlined that data have revealed the staggering lengths to which Internet abuse has extended and the accompanying financial losses.

The book examines the extent to which this phenomenon exists among public sector workers in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It explores literature related to organizational misbehaviour with emphasis on Internet abuse. It also examines data collected from the specified population. It then draws upon data collected to arrive at conclusions and formulate a proposed Internet Use Policy that could be used to control these activities and reduce the negative impacts they can have.

Williams noted that the information could prove very useful to students and lecturers of Management and Organizational Behaviour, as well as employers who are trying to cope with the identified phenomenon.

She explained that the advent of the computer, particularly the Internet, has raised hopes of increased productivity, but it also raised questions of ethical use in the workplace, as it has huge potential for damage to fellow employees, the employer and the organization.

Williams, a graduate of the St. Vincent Girls’ High School, holds a Master’s in Human Resource Management from the University of Newcastle; a BSc degree in Nursing Education from the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus; and Registered Nursing and Midwifery certificates from the St.Vincent and the Grenadines School of Nursing.

She was a Nursing Tutor at the School of Nursing for 13 years, before taking up the position of Senior Nursing Officer (Principal), a position which she held for eight years, before taking early retirement in 2009.

She is the founder and sole consultant and trainer of Abundant Life Training and Consultancy Services.

She said “Organizational Misbehaviour: Internet Abuse Among Public Sector Workers In St. Vincent And The Grenadines” is her first book, but certainly not her last, as she has plans to publish at least two more during the year 2011.
