Nine Vincentians to take up full scholarships in Dominican Republic

Nine students left St Vincent and the Grenadines on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, to pursue studies in the Dominican Republic.{{more}}

The students have received full scholarship in various disciplines, including Medicine, Civil Engineering, Economics and Quantity Surveying, and will pursue their courses at the Dominican Republic’s State University in Santo Domingo “Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo” (USD).

Ambassador to CARICOM Ellsworth John said that “St Vincent and the Grenadines is very grateful to the Government and people of the Dominican Republic for their contribution to human resource development and the education revolution. In particular, this government is grateful to St. Vincent and the Grenadines Honorary Consul, Regina Koenig, who performed yeoman service in ensuring that all the logistical arrangements were in place for the arrival of the students.”

This gesture by the Dominican Republic will also help to broaden and facilitate contact between the two countries, John said.

John reiterated that the move is part of St Vincent and the Grenadines ongoing diplomatic initiative to strengthen relations with the Dominican Republic and other countries we have not traditionally had relations with.

The names of the students and their field of study are: Medicine – Anna Adams, Deroy Ferdinand and Rachel Richardson-Williams; Civil engineering:- Shareen Gumbs and Lorielle Robertson and Economics: Kimisha Andrews, Kimeisha Bailey and Kenvil Walters, Quantity Surveying: Jovannie Rose.

Ten scholarships were offered. However, one of the students dropped out at the last minute.
