Simon looks to win

Clayton Burgin of the incumbent Unity Labour Party (ULP) and Dr. Linton Lewis of the New Democratic Party (NDP) have been locked in battle for months in the East St. George Constituency as they vie to win that seat, but Susan Simon of the St.Vincent and the Grenadines Green Party has joined the tussle, with the aim of creating an upset.{{more}}

Simon, a resident of Fairhall, was nominated to contest the East St. George Constituency on a Green Party ticket on Friday, November 26.

She said while some people may say that this is a late stage for her to be entering the race, she does not hold that view.

She said the late Julian “Bucky” Boyea was instrumental in fostering her political aspirations before his passing.

“Now that our leader Mr.O’Neal asked me [to enter the race], I remember Julian “Bucky” Boyea. So I say it’s a challenge. Let me go and do it,” Simon stated.

She pointed out that she has been a farmer for 21 years, farming 7 1/2 acres of land at Rabacca, and as a result of her experience, she believes that she is the fittest person to be the country’s next minister of agriculture.

“My real reason for getting involved in active politics is that farmers are really not getting anything for their crops,” said Simon, lamenting that there is no stable price for the produce of farmers.

“It’s a very hurting situation for me,” said Simon.

She said her desire as minister of agriculture is to create new markets for farmers in St.Vincent and the Grenadines. (HN)
