SVG Green Party calls for PM to be charged with negligence

The SVG Green Party is calling for Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves to be charged with negligence and non-compliance with Section 72 (1) of the SVG 1979 Constitution.{{more}}

The call was made by Ivan O’Neal, Leader of the SVG Green Party and Ras Bongo Shines, in a SVG Green Party press release issued on Wednesday, November 3.

Section 72 (1) of the SVG 1979 Constitution mandates that a contingency fund be set up, from which unforeseen or emergency expenditure can be met, the news release outlined.

It further stated that the Director of Audit’s report said that a contingency fund has not been established.

“Hurricane Tomas caused substantial damage to SVG and its economy on 30th October 2010. As there is no contingency fund to provide emergency help to the people of SVG, the people are at the mercy of the international community, hoping that emergency aid will arrive,” said the news release.

The news release said that the SVG Green Party calls on the International Court of Justice to charge Prime Minister Gonsalves “with negligence and non-compliance of Section 72 (1) of the SVG 1979 Constitution, in not setting up a contingency fund to meet the emergency and unforeseen needs of the people of SVG”.

“PM Gonsalves’ non-compliance has put the livelihoods of the people at risk. His actions are immoral and unacceptable,” said the news release.
