GHS raises money for kidney transplant

It is better to give than to receive.

As the students and faculty of the Girls’ High School celebrated their 27th annual Harvest and Thanksgiving programme last Friday, October 8, pledges from the activity were donated to a past student in dire need of a kidney transplant.{{more}}

This year, the school raised $8,160, all of which was donated to Ayana Findlay.

Findlay, who attended the school from 2003 to 2008, was a proud member of Moffet House and a member of the Number 11 Girl Guide Company. She is set to undergo transplant surgery, hopefully by the end of the year.

The 19-year-old is expected to receive a kidney from her uncle, and all hopes are that after surgery, she will be able to live as close to normal a life as possible.

Findlay started experiencing kidney problems in 2006, and has since been undergoing dialysis treatment. She is currently undergoing Peritoneal Dialysis.

In accepting the donation, Findlay thanked the school for its gesture.

Her aunt, Mavis Findlay-Joseph said that Ayana has received donations from individuals, groups and churches towards her medical expenses.

At last Friday’s ceremony, GHS Deputy Headmistress Michelle Beache delivered the World Food Day message and Senior Education Officer Carlton Hall addressed the students.

The awards for the best classrooms were announced, and this year’s contestants in the annual Miss Heritage Pageant also made an appearance. Harvest boxes were distributed after the assembly.(JJ)
