Courts reading competition finals next week

The finals of the local leg of the Courts OECS reading competition is set to take place next week, following the successful staging of the preliminary rounds of competition.{{more}}

The competition, organized by the Ministry of Education, will see nine primary school students taking part in the finals scheduled for Tuesday, October 19, at Frenches House, Kingstown.

The winner earns the right to represent St. Vincent and the Grenadines at the regional finals scheduled for Grenada later this year, where they can win for themselves and their school $5000, a laptop computer and other prizes.

Here at home, the successful student and their school will receive EC $2000, and will appear on SVG TV, where the student will read one segment of the station’s evening news telecast.

All finalists will receive books, trophies, and an account at the Bank of Nova Scotia for making it to the finals.

The finalists are Jada Peters of the Bequia Anglican School, Rhobyn Barnabe of the Kingstown Preparatory, Enrico Castello of the Colonarie Primary, Briana Montrope of the Chateaubelair Primary, Shenique Thomas of the St. Mary’s Roman Catholic, Nickelson Lavia of the Owia Primary, Roneifa Clarke of the Argyle Primary, Dandre Toney of the Georgetown Primary and Calissa Prevost of the Lauders Primary.

Of the 66 primary schools in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, 56 participated.

Ministry of Education officials, who oversaw the running of the competition, said that the preliminary round was of a very high standard, and expect the finals to be keenly contested.
