This announcement was made during the ceremony to mark the signing of the twinning agreement between the CCH and the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH).
Chargé dâAffairs of the Republic of China on Taiwan, Michael Lin, speaking at the ceremony, said that a 40 foot container of equipment was sent to St. Vincent with about 180 pieces of medical equipment, and the other container is expected to arrive soon. In addition, a team of volunteer doctors and nurses from the CCH will lend their assistance at the MCMH, the Mental Health Centre and the School of Nursing for three weeks.
Lin also mentioned the history of the relationship between the Ministry of Health in St. Vincent and the CCH. Lin said that several Vincentians have been trained at the CCH.
According to Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and the Environment, Lanceford Weekes, who made brief remarks at the ceremony, the signing of the agreement was the culmination of discussions between medical officials from Taiwan and St. Vincent.
Weekes said that the relationship between both countries will be beneficial; adding that there are medicines that may be absent in Taiwan that Vincentians can offer. âIn the area of medicine, there are things that are unique or can be found mainly in isolated areas of the world. Therefore, there are things that would be prominent in St. Vincent that would be hard to find in Taiwan…â Weekes said.
He also hopes that Vincentian volunteers who work at the CCH will learn from the experience. âWe are hoping that our volunteers, when we send them to Taiwan, that they will learn and they will benefit from the first world experience provided by the CCH. I hope that both institutions and more so the people that the institution serve will benefit from this relationship.â
The CCH is the largest medical centre in Taiwan has over 3,000 employees and 5,000 beds.
