ULP rally turns Park Hill red
The fire burning under the political stew in the run up to general elections was turned up a notch at the Unity Labour Partyâs rally in Park Hill, last Sunday.{{more}}
The recurring theme of the night was an appeal to all Vincentians, 18 years old and over, to register and vote to keep the New Democratic Party (NDP) from regaining power.
Michelle Fife, lawyer and senator in the House of Parliament, said: âYou must not allow the NDP to come back into power and lead us into wilderness.â
Fife, who accused the Opposition of not supporting women in politics, was adamant that the NDP has no sensible alternative to lead the country forward.
In his address, Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves reiterated what Fife had said; warning the crowd that the NDP would do away with essential programmes and projects that are intended to benefit the nation – especially the financially disadvantaged.
He urged supporters to give him another five years in power; promising the completion of projects such as the international airport at Argyle, the cross country road, the agricultural diversification programme, poverty reduction and the advancement of the education revolution.
Gonsalves also called upon the owners of St. Vincent Distillery Ltd., the manufacturer of Sunset Strong Rum, to lower the cost of the rum because the Government affords it a generous concession on the importation of molasses.
âLetâs have it a little cheaper,â he beseeched. âSell it cheaper!â
The Prime Ministerâs address was preceded by brief remarks from Minister of Transport and Works Clayton Burgin; Minister of Tourism Glen Beache; Senators Cecil McKie and Michelle Fife; Minister of State Saboto Caesar; East Kingstown candidate Luke Browne; and South Leeward candidate Augustus Stevenson.
