CAPE Maths results 2010 – the true story
The Mathematics Lecturers at the AâLevel division of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College are of the view that percentages alone as reported in the media do not tell the true story on the Cape Mathematics 2010 results.{{more}}
A release from the Division said âFactors such as quality of grades and numbers of students sitting the exam should be included.â
The release said: âIt was reported on the SVG Evening news on Saturday, August 21, 2010, that only 43% passed the unit one Cape Math exam. In reality the percentage pass rate is 69%, and this includes private candidates from the evening class programme. When one considers bona fide Community College students, the pass rate is actually 70%.
In Unit One, 143 students sat the exam and 100 of them were successful, giving a percentage pass rate of 70%. Of the 100 successful students, there were 22 grade 1âs, 19 grade 2âs and 17 grade 3âs.
In unit two, 56 students sat the exam with 47 successful students giving a percentage pass rate of 84%. There were 4 grade 1âs, 12 grade 2âs and 10 grade 3âs.
The CAPE grading scheme is based on a scale of grade 1 through 7 with grades 1 through 5 being a pass.â
