On July 22, 2010, Bequia resident, Sten Sargeant was called to the Bar of England and Wales by The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple having completed the Bar Vocational Course (BVC) at Northumbria University at Newcastle upon Tyne.

Sargeant is one of six Barristers to originate from the Grenadine Island of Bequia. He follows Hudson K. Tannis, William F. Mitchell and more recently Macaulay Peters, Louise Mitchell-Joseph and Godwin L. Friday.

Sargeant attained his Bachelor of Laws Degree with lower second class honours from Holborn College (distance learning) in 2008 whilst working as Purchasing Manager at the Cotton House Hotel. Speaking to SEARCHLIGHT earlier this week, Sargeant said working and studying at the same time called for a lot of “self-confidence and discipline to complete the course work on time.”

Sargeant thanked God for guidance and protection. He also thanked his family and Lawyer Olin Dennie who he said told him that ‘he was at the right age’ to commence his studies. He also thanked Dr. Godwin Friday and veteran attorney Arthur Williams and his sons Richard and Stephen who welcomed him like family.

Sargeant attributed much of his success to the Bequia Seventh Day Adventist Primary School for giving him a sound foundation in his primary education.

He noted that it had been a long hard journey and the BVC was truly a test of his mental and physical strength. “My grandfather always told me the race is not for the swift, but those who can endure to the end,” he said.

Sargeant is now putting the necessary arrangements in order to be called to the local Bar later this year.(KW)
