GHS Alumni visit Dame Monica Dacon
A few members of the local chapter of the Girlsâ High School (GHS) Alumni enjoyed an evening{{more}} of light conversation and laughs with newly appointed Dame Monica Dacon last Thursday afternoon.
The GHS Alumni visited Dame Monica at her Prospect home to pay tribute to her in light of her recent knighthood and the fact that she is the first Vincentian woman to receive that honour. Dacon was presented with a bouquet of roses and GHS Centenary memorabilia.
The women discussed past and present achievements of the GHS, the days spent as students of the school as well as the ongoing Centenary Lecture Series.
Dame Monica is a past student and past teacher of the GHS.
President of the local chapter of the Alumni Joye Browne, making brief remarks, expressed that the ladies of the GHS are proud of Dacon and her achievements.
Dame Monica, in response explained that her life has not changed since she was knighted. She said she still does the same things; her days are usually spent in her garden and she still does all her chores, including washing her clothes by hand. âMaybe a Dame doesnât do these things. Then Iâm a Dame with a difference,â she said with a smile.
The visiting party was made up of Chairperson of the GHS Lecture Series organizing committee Laura Anthony Browne; Headmistress of the GHS Andrea Bowman; President of the GHS Alumni Joye Browne; GHS Executive Member Alma Dougan and daughter of Laura Anthony Browne, Tsha.
On June 18, 2010, Government House announced that Queen Elizabeth II had granted the approval for the title of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) to be bestowed on Dacon.
