All of Robertson’s possessions were destroyed as the fire engulfed her two storey, two bedroom home at McKies Hill around midnight Saturday, July 17,2010.

Robertson told SEARCHLIGHT that she and her children, ages 14, 11 and 6 years old, were at a relative’s home when she heard of the incident. She explained that she was asleep but woke up at around 4 o’clock in the morning and checked her phone, only to see that she had missed a call from her neighbour.

Robertson said that she returned the call and the neighbour explained that her house had burnt at around midnight, and that police and firemen were on the scene, but nothing was saved. Robertson later arrived on the scene.

“When I got there I saw what was left. There was nothing there. Everything was just burnt,” she said.

“I’m really, really devastated. I felt as though it was a nightmare,” Robertson said. She added that the children are also ‘stressed’ about the situation.

“The children are distraught.”

With the reopening of school around the corner, Robertson said that she would try her best to get them ready for that time, but she needs help.

“We really need help. We need groceries, clothes…we are asking the public for help,” she said.

She now lives with her nephew, but disclosed that she has a home available just above the burnt house. However, it’s construction is incomplete and its windows were cracked as a result of the fire.
