Cop, traffic warden stuck by vehicle

A police officer and a traffic warden received injuries last Tuesday evening while the officers were engaged in efforts to curb wreckless driving on the roads after Carnival.{{more}}

SEARCHLIGHT received reports that PC444 Kenny Jones and traffic warden Elsa Hunte were part of a team at Sion Hill that was controlling traffic at about 10:30 p.m. when they were struck by motor vehicle PJ399, driven by Theophilus Gordon of Prospect.

The officers, it is reported, had just stopped a pickup loaded with people when a motor vehicle, owned by Eugene Gordon of Prospect, came around a corner and hit them.

It is claimed that Jones received injuries to his back, left hand, and one of his knees; Hunte, it is reported, received injuries to her hip, right knee, and bruises to one of her hands.

Tyricia Williams, a 14-year-old female, and Cauldric Williams, 20, of Sandy Bay, also sustained injuries in the incident.

Gordon, who according to reports, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, was taken to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH), where he gave consent for a test for alcohol intoxication to be administered.

A police officer told SEARCHLIGHT that the test confirmed what was suspected.

Gordon was arrested and charged with “driving under the influence of a drink”, and for lacking due care and attention.

On Wednesday, July 7, 2010, Gordon was taken to the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court where he pleaded guilty to the two charges.

He was fined $500 and was disqualified from holding a driver’s permit for a period of six months.
