10 beauties vie for Miss Carival Friday

Nine beauties from across the region as well as St.Vincent and the Grenadines’ own Aphesha Matthews will vie for the coveted Miss Carival 2010 title this weekend.{{more}}

But on Friday, July 2, 2010, only one of the beauties from Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Martinique, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela or Matthews from St.Vincent and the Grenadines will get the opportunity to leave Victoria Park with the crown and all the perks that come with it.

Contestants and their chaperones began arriving in the state on LIAT on Monday, June 28, 2010, and leave on Saturday, July 3, 2010.

Cheryl Rodriguez, Chairperson of the Carnival Development Corporation’s (CDC) Beauty Shows Committee, has announced that photos and biographies have been made available to all members of the media and photos will be placed at Singer in Kingstown.

Rodriguez disclosed that Young Island Resorts Ltd. will provide accommodation for the contestants and their chaperones at very concessionary rates as they have done for several years.

Outlining the itinerary which the contestants will follow, Rodriguez said, they will have a talent preview on Monday, June 28, followed by a briefing and sashing ceremony and meet the media, live radio interviews, and a dress rehearsal on Tuesday, June 29.

On Wednesday, June 30, 2010, the bevy of beauties will visit business houses in Kingstown and will get the opportunity to visit Prime Minister Dr.Ralph Gonsalves and other members of his Cabinet. This will be followed by the official motorcade around Kingstown

According to Rodriguez, the contestants will also make guest appearances at the Junior Calypso and Junior Soca Monarch shows, as well as the Senior Panorama event.

Their package also includes a scenic drive and visit to the St.Vincent Distillery in Georgetown on Thursday, July 1.

“Members of the public will have the opportunity to meet the contestants at these functions and, of course, demonstrate to them the warmth and hospitality for which Vincentians are well known and offer unstintingly,” said Rodriguez.

The winner of Miss Carival 2010 will receive U.S.$ 4,300.00 from the CDC, the 1st Runner-up U.S.$ 1,300.00, and the 2nd Runner-up U.S.$700.00, along with gifts from local business houses.

The Miss Carival pageant was first staged in SVG in 1985 and so far 6 Vincentians have won the coveted title.

Miss Asheida Charles of Grenada is the reigning Miss Carival 2009.
