Man charged with kidnap, rape of girl

Winston Lavia has been slapped with three charges, including rape, following an incident which took place at Belair last weekend.

The 55-year-old Lavia is charged with kidnapping
and raping a 10-year-old girl.

The girl was reportedly snatched while she was sitting near to a stream while her grandmother was a short distance away.

Lavia was also charged with damaging a black Motorola cellular phone.

Reports claim that Lavia was allegedly kidnapped on the afternoon of Saturday, June 12, 2010, and dragged her to a house where he is alleged to have raped her.

A resident of Belair stated on a radio programme earlier this week that he saw the man dragging the child to a house but he was afraid to rescue the child as he did not know whether the man was armed.

He opted to call the police.

It is claimed by the time the police arrived, residents of Belair were about to attack Lavia.

When SEARCHLIGHT visited the area on Monday, a resident reported that the police had to fire warning shots in the air to quell the commotion.

Lavia was arrested and appeared before the Family Court on Monday, June 14.

In January this year, Lavia was released from Her Majesty’s Prison after spending almost 10 years in jail. (HN)
