Variety of fun planned for Canouan Regatta

Organizers of the Canouan Whitsuntide Regatta are promising to stage a cultural extravanga that will provide five days of funfilled action on the Grenadine isle.{{more}}

The regatta, which attracts patrons from all over the world, kicks off on Thursday, May 20, 2010, and runs until Monday, May 24, 2010.

Carlos McLauren, Public Relations Officer of the event being put on by the Canouan Sailing Club, said this year, patrons can expect ring dancing, drumming, poetry, seafood, sailing, and a wide range of other activities. There will also be a foam party, a wet fete, and a chocolate party.

“It’s a weekend where you get a bit of everything. Thursday, you can experience pan and dance, and on the Friday you can enjoy all sorts of sea food,” said McLauren.

He used the opportunity to note that the event held under the theme ‘Party Hard’ is being staged on a Grenadine island where there is almost no crime. Hence, patrons can expect to enjoy themselves to the fullest, and feel safe.

To persons from mainland St.Vincent interested in travelling to Canouan, McLauren said, “You can bring the entire family down.”

Regarding the sailing competition, sailors for this event will be fielded from Bequia, Carriacou, Mayreau, Petit Martinique and Union Island. Representatives from these islands were chosen, said McLauren, because the traditional boats which will be used during the competition are built on the isles mentioned.This year model boats will be included in the competition.

“The rivalry between the islands is something you can look forward to as the sailors look to outdo each other,” said McLauren, noting that the regatta is an avenue for boat builders to showcase their skills. “They get to show who is the best.”

The PRO told SEARCHLIGHT the regatta, which is into its 13th year, is a welcome boost to the economic dynamics of the island.

McLauren expressed the desire to see the regatta developed in one of the main tourism activities in the Grenadines.

“This is a niche we have in the Grenadines. We can try to develop this as one of the activities in the Grenadines that boost our tourism product,” McLauren noted.
