FirstCaribbean makes donation for heritage preservation
This yearâs celebrations to mark the countryâs heritage has been given a boost by FirstCaribbean International.
The bank has once again demonstrated its commitment to the overall development of this country by supporting the efforts of the Garifuna Heritage Foundation (TGHF).{{more}} The Foundation is a non-profit organization designed to identify and promote Garifuna Culture and Heritage in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Since its inception, TGHF has been pivotal in bringing the national debate on this issue to the forefront.
During the 2010 activities for National Heroes and Heritage Month, TGHF collaborated with the Fancy Community Group to hold a cultural gathering. This was a follow-up to a similar event held at Rosehall on the Leeward side of the island in November 2009. Building on the success of this event, seven groups from traditional Garifuna communities on the Windward side of the island gathered in Fancy to share knowledge about their culture and to discuss ideas and formulate strategies for promoting Garifuna Culture and Heritage. FirstCaribbeanâs contribution to the tune of just over $400,000 made these important gatherings possible.
Acting Country Head Elroy John says FirstCaribbean is keen to play a role in the continued evolvement and development of our indigenous communities, as they face the challenges of a changing St.Vincent and the Grenadines, while at the same time embracing their rich past.
